Asfar M. Basha, Esq
Founding Attorney & Counselor at Law
Asfar Basha is an estate planning and business attorney licensed in Vermont, and the founder of Basha Law, PLLC. His practice is centered on developing customized legal tools for individuals, families, and business owners that are firmly aligned with their personal values, family priorities, and long-term goals. Asfar has been proud to help numerous Vermonters structure their estates, protect their hard-earned assets, and create lasting legacies for the people they love most.
Asfar provides holistic legal services designed to help his clients accomplish their objectives — whether that means avoiding the time and expense of probate, protecting a business they have spent years building, or finding practical, cost-effective legal solutions that do not require unnecessary court involvement.
Asfar's passion for serving families and business owners is rooted in his own story. He was born at what is now UVM Medical Center, just one year after his parents immigrated to Vermont from South India. Growing up on Pine Street in Burlington as the only U.S. citizen in his family, Asfar experienced firsthand the profound and lasting impact that the legal system can have on a family's life. His family's 15-year journey through the immigration system — including monthly trips to attorneys in New York and Massachusetts and regular appearances in Boston Immigration Court — ultimately culminated in his parents and siblings receiving their Green Cards in 2014 and later becoming naturalized U.S. citizens. That journey, and the sacrifices that made it possible, is foundational to who Asfar is as an attorney.
Asfar also inherited his entrepreneurial spirit from his parents. His family operated a Dollar Store in the Burlington Square Mall, and his father ran a local taxi business — if you grew up in the Burlington area, you may remember calling Asfar Taxi. His mother ran an online telecommunications business and founded a thriving nonprofit that operated on weekends. The work ethic, sacrifice, and unwavering faith his parents modeled are the core tenets of Asfar's law practice.
Asfar earned his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Vermont in three years, graduating at the onset of COVID-19. He subsequently served as a Special Education Paraprofessional at his former middle school, Frederick H. Tuttle in South Burlington, before enrolling in the accelerated J.D. program at Vermont Law School in the fall of 2021.
At Vermont Law School, Asfar earned the Academic Excellence Award in both Legal Research and Race and the Law Seminar for achieving the highest grades in those courses. He served as a Teaching Assistant in Civil Procedure and Constitutional Law, and represented noncitizen clients in asylum proceedings at the Vermont Immigrant Assistance Clinic. He founded the Muslim Law Students Association and helped establish the First-Generation Law Students Association, and served on the Student Bar Association's executive committee as Diversity Chair.
In his final semester of law school, Asfar served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Nancy J. Waples, Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. In that role, he assisted Justice Waples in legal research, analysis, and drafting — including contributing to the Court's opinion in State v. Phillips, 2024 VT 10.
Following law school, Asfar deepened his expertise in business and regulatory law while working at a large national healthcare staffing agency, where he conducted legal research and analysis on state licensing statutes and regulations across the country and drafted policy manuals and compliance documents.
In early 2025, Asfar established Basha Law, PLLC, with a clear mission: to build a modern, accessible, and technology-driven law practice that delivers personalized legal services without the overhead and cost of a traditional large firm. Since its founding, Basha Law, PLLC has served individuals, families, nonprofits, and business owners on matters relating to estate planning, business law, and probate administration, with specialized expertise in religiously compliant planning.
Outside of the office, Asfar serves on the Board of the Free Access Health Clinic in South Burlington, a nonprofit medical clinic providing free healthcare services to uninsured and underinsured Vermonters. In his personal time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their cat Camila, exploring Vermont's food scene, watching Celtics games and Arsenal matches, and playing basketball.
